June 2022 Reading
I remember a time when summer meant more reading, but that time has passed. In June, I read four books, three of which are in the picture because the fourth one was an audiobook. I’ve been in a fiction sort of mood, so that’s all I read.
The audiobook was The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have read it many times before, including twice out loud because I have two kids, but I hadn’t read it in a long time. I will always enjoy it. And, after so many re-watching of the films, it was a pleasure to get to meet Tom Bombadil again. As a side note, I have learned that I want unabridged audiobooks read by one person who does voices, not full casts or adaptations. As another side note, libraries are cool because you can check out audiobooks right to your phone! Final side note: I am very lucky to have my own personal librarian to explain how to work the library technology.
I’ve continued my progress through all the works of Ursula Le Guin by reading Gifts and Tales from Earthsea. Her work is always worth reading. I felt really anxious reading Gifts because I liked the narrator a lot and I thought something in particular was going to happen that would be bad for everyone, but the plot twisted a different and more satisfying way. Nonetheless, I found the book a bit stressful. Tales from Earthsea, however, was delightful.
Finally, I read the second book in the Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn, A Perilous Undertaking. It is a rollicking good read. Two thumbs up.
