Whose idea was it

to gather in the corner of the gym?

Someone brought the empty

bottle of Pepsi and cleared away

the crepe paper streamers.

The avid circle stared, dappled

with mirror-ball light

and peppered with the deejay’s beat.

The bottle spun with a hollow sound,

its blue cap pointing

at one carefully curled girl.

The boy, boldness transformed

into something else, leaned

across the empty space,

lips barely brushing, to

the cheers of the crowd

and the crack of one heart.
